MINING NEWS.
! Thames, July 2. Waiotaiii. — Cleaning up for the month took place yesterday afternoon, when 205 tons of quartz from all parts of the mine yielded 2580z retorted, or 2490z lOdwt melted gold. Lone ' Hand. — A crushing of 34 loads of quartz and 201bs of picked stone was finished to-day for the excellent return of 760z 6d\vfc melted gold. This leaves a good margin of profit. Saxon. — This morning the mine manager wired: — " Finished up crushing at both batteries. The total amount of retorted gold banked is 2930z5. " The recent heavy rains have resulted in landslips in various parts of the city. In Upper Queen-street a retaining wall has given way, which cost the owner £100 to erect. In Upper Pitt-street a slip has occurred at the rear of the King's Arms Hotel. TirAMhS, June 3. Mining matters continue very quiet, no new discoveries having been made in any of the mines. Some excellent returns have lately been banked, however, and on the whole there are signs of an ultimate improvement in this important industry. Lone Hand. — Operations in this mine are being attended with increased success, and the return of 76ozs 6dwts telegraphed yesterday as having been obtained from 3-i loads of quartz and 2Clbs ot picked stone, shows a mai-ked improvement on the yield for the previous month. In the mine the fetopes in the Lone Hand and Manchester sections are being pushed ahead as usual, and colouis and dabs of gold are frequently seen in the quartz coming to hand, while occasionally a few picked stones are selected from the general dirt. The most important work in progress, however, is the low level, and it is fully expected that when the Manchester boundary is reached, some very rich quartz will be obtained, as good gold was left showing in places on the iloor of the level above. This le v el has now been extended a distance of about 60ft. since operations were commenced on behalf of the Company, the cours-e of the reef being followed. Within the last day or two, however, a " break >5 has been met with, which has> had the effect of heaving a reef, and a survey has just been made to ascertain which way driving should bo carried on to again pick it up. The occurrence of these "breaks" or "faults" has frequently a good eflect upon the lodes, and ie is hoped that when the reef is again intersected it will show an improvement. A trial parcel of quartz from this low level is now being put through at Bull's battery with a view to ascertaining its exact value, but the return is expected to be small, as no gold was seen when breaking it out. A yield of Bdwts per load would provo remunerative. Saxon. — The manager of this Company's mine yesterday banked the return of 2930zs retorted gold — reduced on melting to 2870zs 3dwts — as the result of the treatment of 458 loads of quartz and 301bs picked stone during the past three weeks by 25 head of stampers. The erection of the additional 10 head of stamps at the Company's battery, and the various other improvements, have now been completed by Messrs Price Bros., who are to be complimented upon the exceedingly satisfactory manner in which the work has been carried out. The full force of stampers was set in motion late yesterday afternoon, when everything was found to work as smoothly and satisfactorily as could be desired. With reference to operations in the mine, there is really no change to report. Colours of gold are occasionally seen in the qunrtz being broken out from the various workings, including the stopes at No. 5 level. Gem (YVaiomo). — This Company's mine has been •' shut down " for the present. New Albuenia. — The reef averages 12 inches in thickness, and is looking rather better than it did in the drive. Colours of gold have been seen throughout the quartz at each breaking-down. The mine manager I will soon be able to get out a trial crushing of 20 loads to best its value. There are about 10 loads of quartz on hand. Tributevs :— Jobe and party crushed 18 loads quartz for 48ozs ; Bridges and party crushed 18 loads quartz for sozs 13dwts. New Manukatj. — From to-tnorrow's cleaning-up a payable return is expected from the first crushing from new block on Mulligan's lode. The leader is looking about the same, and a little gold was seen when broken dawn last.
