TOWN VERSUS COUNTRY.
It was intended by the Government to have a debate on the Property Tax Assessment Bill on Friday, but Sir H. Atkinson asked the leader of the Opposition yesterday what was the feeling of the House on this matter. He had received deputations from town and country members with respect to the proportion of representation, and it seemed to him that the question was one of such general inCeiest that it would be advisable lo take the debate on the Representation Bill, if the] Government proposals on the matter were brought down on Fridajr, before the property tax question was touched upon. He was prepared to meet the House upon the subject. Mr Ballance replied that the feeling of the Opposition was that the question of representation should take puoiity, and he had gi eat pleasure in responding to the proposal. Before the matter was finally settled for Friday, several of the members aired their eloquence, giving the Premier suggestions as to what he should put in the Bill, while the bitterness of the coming fight was presaged by the tone of the discussion.
