(From Our Own Correspondent.) A SINGULAR CASE.

Paeuoa, Thursday. A case of a very unusual kind lias recently occurred at Paeroa, by which Mr M. G , Power, propriotor of the All Nations Hotel, has lust 1113 license, through his own neglect, or rather, oversight.; . , Tlie circumstances, we understand, are much as follows : On June Ist,- at the annual meeting , of the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee amongst the applications lor renewals granted was that of Mr Powtr. The certificate dated' -Juus lafc, „w«f ia due course issue*; to Mr Ei>Tr^r. Op. the 23rd June, 'Mr Power waited! ; on thd Clerk fend Treasurer ol the bounty Council, with the certificate and license fee, and asked that the license.be issued to him. The Clerk of coatee had no option but to refuse to issue the license on the ground that he coald not legally do so at that date, as after the expiration.- of fourteen days from the time the certificate" w.is issued, it became null and void (see, Section 70, Licensing Act, 1881). A special meeting of the U-mn-cil was convened toaee if anything could be done, or their Treasurer authorised to accept the license fee, but after 'due consideration they decided tlinfc tht»y could render no assistance to, the, party chiefly concerned in this matter, as' at , that dace t6give any instructions for the acceptance of the fee and issue of a license wool 1 be simply ridiculously ; absurd in 1 its illegality. They therefore referred Mr' Power back again to the Lioer sing* Committee (and, lam infprmed, . went; the length of promising to indemnify them against any pecuniary loss v that might arise if thi*y woulfl',' ooihaeriV-to re-date the certificate. If the Council did go this length,- as it is, stated they . did. they certainly t.adoptod »• most extraordinary line of acsion. H >wever, {\ spec'al meeting of the Licensing Committee was held on Monday last, the following members being present: Messrs Edwards (Chairman). Lipsey; vCock, and Barrett. Mr Lipsey strongly objected to the Committee 'taking any action in matter at that date, as being illegal ; in fact he characterise! the hol<!i'itr of the special* meeting 'referred to, and everything done by,ifc<'*s quite i^^^al, After a Jon^- discussion it was dec'.J^il by & insj-.nty of the Committee to adjourn the ' meeting 1 to 1 Monday 1 next, in order to give the applicant time to secure the services of a solicitor id jplead his cause. Mr Power uiges »tßat 'it was simply 'an oversight on his p*t§ allowing the proper time williin' wliidh' ne could 1 apply to plapse,. and I . have no reason to think otherwise. Bat whatever sympathy may be' felt for Mr Power, it is quite clenr it is beyond the powers of either the Councilor Licensing Committee to legally rectify the error at this date. The case lia3- excited" ihdch"interest locally, in fact for some days wa9 quite the topic ot conversation^ [Section 1 70' 'of the ''Licensing" 'Act/ 1881, reads as follows : — "Every certifi-, cate shall be void unless the sum , required to be paid for the license thereby authorised be paid to. the proper officer entitled t& receive the same within fourteen dayg after the 1 granting of such' certificate.",] fr „ ,t, t 7— The Recent Flood I:.'1 :.' Proposed NW* Wharf : — A movement is on fopt here to raise a, subscription towards the cost of constructing" « large and substantial wharf, close to the Puerou-Te Ai;qha 4 bridge, in the centre of the Paeroa township. [Messrs Bennett, J. Phillips, and JJobson, are interesting themselves . in the matter, and to succeed" in collecting £100, and to 'then petition the County Council ,tp subsidise £ for £. The' movement is descrying of the,, hearty support • botli of all local residents au4_, also of 'the' dpunty' Council, as since ( the ; « recent big iflbo\l the" 'place is Without a wharf. v |j -\,i^ *... \, '.
