Recognition of Merit. PRESENTATION TO MRT. E. CLOUGE
Our respected and obliging post-master at Te Aroha, Mr T. E. Clough, was on Thursday last presented with an address, expressive of the esteem in which he is held ntTe Awamntn and district, ?md regret at his being transfcired from thence to Te Aroha. The addruss was accompanied by a further substantial recognition in the shape of a puree of sovereigns. The address i* dated September 12th, 1888;. and the delay in making the presentation, we lenrn, was occasioned by it being expected Mr Clough would have ere now re-visited Te Awamutu, and it was desired if possible to present it there, «o that those ho desiring might h.ive un opportunity of being present on the occasion. At length those having the matter injiand, growing impatient at the loner delay, despatched Mesais T. Lyons and G. M. A.ibin-Ahier to Te Ar^ha to make the presentation, which they dil as above stated. f lhe following is a copy of the testimonial :—: — To Mr Thomas Ed. Clough, Postmaster, Te Awamntu. Dear Sir,— -After your long residence here we learn with great regret that you have received instructions to proceed to another district, and ai it appears to be inevitable, it only rpmiin* for us to testify our hearty appreciation of your worth, not only as a faithful servant of th*> Department to which you are attached, but asf'ftn unpretentious and honest man, ever leady to act tho part of the good (Samaritan. Therefore, wishing 3'ou and xpijr "family eveiy happiness, and aVui-ntr your acceptance of the accompanying purse of sovereigns, We remain yours truly, For the Inhabitants of the Town of Te Avramutu and District of Rangiawhia, J. Walton, Chairman Town Board, Win. Taylor, . Chairman Rangiawhia Road Board. Te Awamutu, Sept. 12th, 1888. We congratulate Mr Clough on being the recipient of such a very complimentary testimonial, which, however, we are quite sure i«? nothing more thuh he well deserves, and have much 'pleasure in adding our testimony to that of those who have" known him so very much longer, that he is a most p&iustaking, efficient, and with all exceptionally obliging public officer ; and hi* transfer to Te Aroha has been a mutter of, universal satisfaction to local residents.' i
