MINING NEWS.
Thames, June 25. Gem (Waiotno). — Driving at No. 2 level is proceeding on the main reef both ways from the bottom of the winze. The quartz carries some nice mineral, and is ot a kindly description, although no gold has been seen in the stone. Pakoquet. — This mine is still shut down, pending the receipt of instructions from the directors in Melbourne. Marototo G. a>*d S.M. Co. — There are 100 tons of argentifeious ore on hand, the value of which is from £28 to £35 per ton. In addition to this there are also four lots of picked stuff, estimated to be worth about £330 per ton. Saxox. — Cleaning up and retorting will not take place until the latter end of the week.
Thames, June 26. Caledonian*. — The mine manager reports: The drive at the intermediate level has been extended 8 feet during the past week. The reef here is 20 inches in thickness, and of the usual description. In the leading second and third stopes a few colours of gold have been seen in breaking down the quartz, but the reef is smaller, going up only ten inches in the back of the third stope. I will push the drive ahead, and have commenced an underhand stope from the floor of this. I have also started two men to break quartz at No. 2 level. Neavbery - Vautix Co. — The new machinery for treatment of argentiforous ores for the Newbery-Vautin Co. has arrived from England. It haa been decided to erect it at Waihi instead of the Thames as originally proposed. Dr. Schudel will superintend its erection and it will be immediately proceeded with. Ne* Moanataiari. — The Reuben Parr reef has been cut into for 4ft, but there is no sign of the opposite wall yet. Lone Band. — The reef in the low level •has been broken down, but no gold was seen. The quartz, however, carries nice mineral. Crushing has been commenced. Saxon. — As the result of the past fortnight's work there are only 4500z of amalgam. Cleaning up and retorting will not take place until the end of the week. The manager has removed a number of men from the stopes over No. 2 level, owing to a falling-off of a ' reef , and has put them to work at No. 5 level. Cambria. — The No. 7 leader is about five inches in thickness and shows a little gold at each breaking down. The leader westward of "the winze averages about five inches in thickness, and at last breaking down a few pounds of picked stone were saved. The leader on No. 3 level is one foot in thickness and carries nice mineral. Lonh Hand. — There are in the hoppers 11 loads quartz broken out from the reef in the General Chute drive. The crosscut in the Lone Hand section is going through a good class of country tor gold, with a small leader in the face, in which dabs and colours of gold are seen. When breaking down, the third ;etope leader 61b picked stone came to. hand during the week, i Colours of- gold and good mineral have been seen in the .other leaders. Prescotb and party, tributers, crushed two loads for' eight pounds picked stone,, for the .return •„ of Boz Bdwt melted gold. • , u ' New, Alburnja. — Irwin and party, tributers, have crushed , 12 loads quartz for 220z 15dwt. t,< ■ ■ < -j '* ( ! Saxon. — Fair indications are reported from the various reefs. . The mine manager has on hand 4530z amalgam, and 301b picked "atone. " , , , , - New Manukau. — Mulligan's leader in ,the stopes is looking fairly well, anda little gold is seen when breaking»_down, I started' a, trial crushing from the new block lyester-' day, and it is shaping for<, a> payable return.
