PITIABLE SCENES. AN EXTENSIVE SUBSIDENCE. THE ENTOMBED MINERS. NO HOPE OF RECOVERY.
Sydney, June 24. The scenes at the mouth of the pit are of a most painful and pathetic character. Crowds of women are standing there in a state of distressful and agonising uncertainty, anxious respecting the fate of loved ones beneath. It is believed that the men Masson, Pettitt, and Peate and son were killed by the falling roof. After the first fall, a party of seven men, having endured terrible hardships, succeeded in escaping. They presented a- pitiable spectacle, several of them bleeding profusely. When the mass of earth fell on Pettitt and his mates, they made desperate endeavours to release them, but their task was in vain, and eventually they had to abandon it, in order to secure the safety of their own lives. It has been ascertained that the following are entombed : — Pettitt, Beaumont, Galows, Grant, Hudson, Banfield, Pcate and son, Masson, Proctor, and Roberts. By a subsequent fall, the rescuers have been driven back for a distance of one hundred yards. The subsidence is a very considerable one, and extends over an area of fifteen acres. All hopes of rescuing the men alive have been abandoned, and the prospects of even recovering the bodies are small.
