SPANISH AMERICA AND THE WEST INDIES.
News was received in the city of Mexico, May 7th, of the discovery of the remains of a large city, heretofore hidden in the depths of a dense forest, near the ruins of Palenque, in the State of Chiapas. Buildings five storyes high are &aid to be in a fair state of preservation, and a t well-paved road, several miles long, is traceable in the trorical undergrowth. The report comes from good sources. From Colon (Aspinwall) on the lethnius quiet is reported, and the city almost deserted. 1,500 labourers left on May 10th for Jamaica, free transportation being furnished by the British Consul. On the 7th, all work on the Canal having ceased, it reverted to the Colombian Government. An immense amount of valuable machinery lies exposed and is being rapidly deteriorated by thej weather. The greater portion of the buildings in Aspinwall are tenantless. A treaty of peace is said to have been projected by Legitime of Hay ti, in which the Island of Gonaives, also a coaling station, were ceded to France, and French capitalists are given special privileges on condition that France assists the Hay tien Government in suppressing the rebellion and accords a subsidy of live millions and a half of francs, with two warships, first class, with arms and equipment. The Anglo-Spanish Steamship Company will soon establish a steam line between Valparaiso, Callao, and Panama, which will also connect with San Francisco and British Columbia, competing with the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and connecting at the last-named place with the Canadian-Pacific road. Small-pox was raging at Guatamala during the last week in June.
