AUCKLAND RACING CLUB WINTER MEETING. Auckland, June 15.

Thk Winter Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, postponed' from last Saturday in consequence of the inclement weather, is taking place on the Ellerslie Racecourse this atternoon. A sharp racing wind is blowing, but otherwise the weathei is beautifully tine ; the heavy rain that has fallen has made the course very heavy. There is a good attendance, but the stands were only fairly patronised. Impey's band is stationed on the lawn, and discoursing sweet strains of music. Mr Blomiield has chai'ge of the totalisators. The event on the programme in which most interest is centred is the Groat Northern Steeplechase. The inaugural contest took place in 1885, when the Gis-borne-owned Macaroni, ridden by Lyford, defeated ten others, and the following year witnessed Mr R. Burkes Belle, carrying list 21b, with Frewin in the saddle, prove victorious. In 1887 Silvio also won, with list 21b, and last year the Wanganuiowned mare Allegro won in a ridiculously easy manner from a field of nine. She had the feather weight of 9st to carry, and was ridden by the late Harry Edgecombe. Allegro's time, Bmin. 44sec, is the fastest in this particular race, bufc Volcano, the winner of the Autumn Steeplechase in 1887, claims the time record over the course, having compassed it in 4sec. less than Allegro. At the Summer Meeting of 1888, Uranus got over the distance in Bmin. 42sec. Appended are the results of to-day's racing that reached us by telephone up to the time of going to press :—: — Handicap Hurdle Race, of lOOsovs. Second horse to receive lOsovs out of the stakes. As they raced to the first hurdle Carronade was still in frono, but a little further on Don was on terms. Armourer closing up, the three were almost abreast at the next obstacle, the favourite being still last. As they swept round the : turn Don wot bis head in front, and passing J the stand he was half a length off Carronade, with Armourer lying well up ; the others being in a duster three lengths behind. Going up the back Armourer drew to the j front, and as they swept into the cutting j his victory was loudly proclaimed, but as they raced across the top stretch Redmond gave Oddfellow his head, and the Wanganui horse was the first to land into the straight.
