FLOODS IN MELBOURNE
J Melbourne, June 15. Heavy rain has fallen, and has caused floods n all parts of the colony. Great; damage has been caused to pro" per by, and the losses will be considerable. The residents of Avoca had to leave their dwellings owing to' the severity of the flood in chat district. A large quantity of stock was drowned at Chiltren. The river M array overflowed its banks at Wodonga, and submerged a large tract of country. The inhabitants of Bowendale were flooded out of their houses and were rescued by boats. .At Elmore a buggy was washed away by the force of the torrent, and the Misses Powell and Zalpin were drowned. Guilford, Newstead, and Barringhup* in the Castlemaine district, are under water. These are the heaviest floods that have occurred in the colony since 1870.
Hobart, June 15. A fierce gale is raging here, and has caused much damage both ashore and afloat. The ye&sels in port have been placed in jeopardy, and their safety is momentarily threatened. The barque Natal Queen broke away from her moorings, but was fortunately brought up by her anchors before she had sustained any serious damage. The s.s. Rotomahana had to leave the harbour in the face of the gale. Heavy floods are general, and the lower part of the city of Hobarb is threatened with inundation.
