MR FIRTH AND THE VICTORIAN TRADE SOCIETIES. Auckland, June 13.
We have received the following communication from the Trades Hall, Melbourne :—: — "To Mr J. C. Firth (per favour Auckland Evening Star) : Respected sir, — The Executive Committee of the United Millers, Engine Drivers, and Mill Labourers Society of Victoria directs us to convey to you the heartfelt sympathy of the operative millers of this colony, and express the hope that the present unfortunate financial difficulties surrounding you will only be of a transient nature. Our Society has read with deep regret accounts of the same in the New Zealand papers. Ib has nob been unknown to the operative millers here that in your day of prosperityyou did your utmost to ameliorate the condition of the working classes, more especially tho?e directly in your employ, and that you were the first in New Zealand to adopt the glorious eight hours principle of labour in our trade, which boon has been thoioughly appreciated by the toiling masses. In conclusion, our Society, under the circumstances, could not let this opportunity pass without expressing to you the sympathy felt. Trusting you will receive this slight token of our esteem in the spirit in which it is offered, and that your auspicious star will speedily rise, — We remain, yours respectfully, , a . lv ) James F. Wii;SO>~, Prc&ident (bigncci) | Walter Hurrm,l, Secietaiy Of United Millers, Engine Drivers and Mill Labourers Society ot Victoria. June 3rd, 1889."
