NEW GOLD FIND. RUSH TOE COROMANDEL PENINSULA.

Prospecting for gold has led to the exploration of much now country, and there is now considerable interest being directed to the land lyine between Mercury Bay and Whangapoua, on the Coromandel Peninsula. JMany have recently gono from Thames and Coromandel to prospect in this direction, and it is generally re73Oi*ted that a very important discovery has been made in the Kuaotuna block. As a number of representative men from Coromandel ha^e gone to the "Kuaotuna rush," as it is termed, thero will soon be furthor intelligence to hand. At present it is known that a largo reef has been found irom which heavy prospects arc obtainable. The usual exaggerated stories are flying about, such as the reef showing dabs of irold in the stone for a distance of three miles, and that Captain Hodge, who had gone to see it, had offered £10,000 for a claim. This, however, is not confirmed, nor is it likely to be. Theiehas been an amount of vigorous prospecting done in the Mercury Bay distiict for some months past, and though nothing rich has been struck, gold has been seen freely in some small leaders, showing the ground is auriferous, and deserves proper working. It is known that somewhere in this vicinity very heavy gold was got a number ot years ago, but the locality was never discovered owing to the sudden death of the man who made the find bub who had not revealed the place.
