MINING NEWS. Thames, June 12.
Saxox. — The return of 3550z5. retorted gold telegraphed yasterday, as being the result of the past fortnight's operations was reduced on melting to 3470zs lOdwts. The yield is very disappointing, as it was generally expected here that it would be at least 40Uozs. In the mine there is nob much change to report. At No. 5 level driving is proceeding both eastward and westward on the No. 1 or main reef. In the former the country is still disturbed, as though the face of the drive is in clo&e proximity to the No. 2 break, but eastward the reef is stronger than it has been for some time. The No. 2 reet at this level looks pretty well, and a faif picked stones are occasionally selected from the general dirt. Taken as a whole, the stopes over No. 2 level are scarcely looking so well, very little gold being observed in the quartz, which consequently does not shape quite so well at the battery. Messrs Price Bros, commence the erection of the additional ten head of stampers at the Company's battery to-day. Cambria. — The hangingwall leader on the s topes over No. 3 Jevel are producing excellent crushing dirt, colours of gold being frequently seen when breaking down the leader, which is almost 8 inches in thickness. In the intermediate drive No. 7 leader is 3 inches wide, and gold is freely seen on stringers in the hangingwall. Good progress is being mado with the drive westward, where the leader is 4 inches in thickness, and looks really well. Lonk Hand. — Dabs and colours of gold are frequently seen in the quartz coming to hand from the various stopes, bub they present no change worthy of mention. Cambria. — The intermediate drive below No. 3 level westward on No. 7 leader is in 36 feet. The leader is aboub 4 inches in thicknees, and gold is seen when breaking down. There are several small stringers of quartz crossing the face of the drive in which gold is also seen. The drive on the leader east of the winze is in ten feet. The leader is about 4 inches in thickness, and when breaking down colours of gold were freely seen. The hangingwall leader on No. 3 level is about 7 inches in thickness, carrying splendid mineral, and shows gold freely when breaking down. There is every indication of gold in the main reef above this level.' Lone Hand. — There is gome nice-looking mineral seen through the quartz in bhe eastern drive in the Lone Hand section ; dabs and colours of gold when breaking down the eastern leader, and also in bhe leading stope west. The fourth, fifth and sixth stopes east also show colours ot gold. Caledonian. — The mine manager reports the drive at intermediate level has been advanced 9 feet during the past week; the reef is about 20 inches in thickness, carrying the same class of mineral as usual, but no gold has been seen. The leading stope has been extended 11 and the second stope 10 feet, in each of these the reef is about 18 inches thick, and in breaking down a few colours of gold are seen and good minerals are abundant. The rise is up another 4 feet, and as soon as a sufficient height is leached, a third stope will be taken in hand. The timber is now past the cross reet in the level, and it (the cross leader) will be further opened up when the leading stope is advanced a few feet beyond it.
Foreseeing there might be some difficulty in the disposal of N elson-grown barley this year, its colour having been somewhat injured by the heavy dews which prevailed at harvest time, Messrs Sclanders and Go. senb Home samples with inquiries as to the price which the grain should realise. The JSrm named has received a reply that such barley arriving Home by October should give a return equal to from 2s 9d to 3s delivered o.n the wharf at Nelson. In order to tafrp advantage of this market, it will be necessary to ship at once, and'4o,ooo bushels wilfhave o be guaranteed.
