SPORTING NEWS. THE MOONEE VALLEY CUP.
Faugh-a-Ballagh, the winner of the rich Moonee Valley Cup, belongs to Mr O'Halloran, ot Goulbourn, N.S. W. Last season ho was beaten in the first round of the Rosehill Dei by. Subsequently he divided with three others the Waterloo Cup on the same ground, and these constitute his early performances. It is worthy of mention that he has rarely killed a hare. The " Melbourne Argus " thus describes: the deciding course for the Valley Cup :-—" Betting : 10 to 9 on Faugh-a ballagh. From a short slip, which was followed by a great race to the hare, Faugh-a-ballagh gained a two lengths and a half lead. He turned very widely and let Bridegroam in, the last-named then scoring from a sequence of rather weak wrenches. Then Faugh -a ballagh got in for a couple of wrenches, afterwards letting Bridegroom in again. The hare went under the rails and made for home, Faugh-a-ballagh going up the hill after her with dash and determination, and passing his opponent. The haic got away in the escapes, and left Faugh-a-ballagh an undoubted winner.*' It is said Faiigh-a-Ballagh was anything but lucky in the stake, having to dispose ot such good ones as Phillina, Khodanthe TL , Red Hind, Hazelhurst, Livingstone, and Ru fiord before reaching the decider. Both winner an:l runner up are second season dogs.
