THE KAIWARRA MURDER. ARREST OF CHEMIS. SUSPICIOUS EVIDENCE. Wellington, June 4.
Early this morning, Louis Chemis was arrested on the charge of murdering Thomas Harldns, and he was subsequently remanded for a week at the KM. Court. Inspector Thomson said until last night neither he nor the Crown Prosecutor considered there was sufficient evidence to justify the arrest, though Chemis had been under suspicion for some time. The accused describes himself as an Italian, bub some who know him well believe him to be a Hungarian, which is more in accord wiLh his name. He is the Louis mentioned in Mrs Harkins's evidence, and it was at his house that the dagger produced at the inquest and the doublebarrelled shot gun were found, and although the shot in the flask does not correspond with those in the body it is said the doctor has detected some pellets in the flesh about the same size.
