THE LAWS OF THE ETERNAL.
Should God's laws be as ours ? Nay ! rather think the builder, , Who rears a temple for all length of time ; Plummet and rule, level,' square, and compass, He UBOB woll, whose work is most sublime. Poor fools ! To think that Ho should err, His great thoughts falter. Or our weak puny arms upstay His hand ; Weep rather we, and pray the gentle Master To give us light to loam His blest command. If shadows fall, or clouds obscure the Master's glory, We say He frowns ! Nay, the eternal smile Is over there, in pity, not in anger ; 'Tis man whose thoughts are ever low and vile ! For so we err. Led not the prophet out of Egynt The willing people from the darkness there, And brought them to an age where light and wisdom Made hidden glories shine in garments fair ? So out of darkneES still the people march to progress, Yet err ; 10, shall the Light of God stand still At man's vile pleasure ? Nay, say we, rather, It stays or moves as 'tis the Master's will. Yet. though we err, another truth is humb'y gathered, A hidden gem shines from the depths of night ; For, lrom the shadows gleam the blest endeavour To burst the cloud that hide 3 the dawn of Light. And go wo where wo list? Nay! His mercy still must guide uh Through weary ages of the Eternal's plan ; Kay ! He will not stay His light, nor let it blind us, For knows He not we arc as yet but man ? He doth compass U3— ay, with majesty and power— Aad gives to each sufficient of His love. Thus the highest crags shall nurse His eaglets. And the lowJy buoh in safety shield His dove ! He gives the poet light that pierces through the shndows, And visions come before him as ho sleeps, And thus he hears the beautiful commandmeat— "0 ! comfort ye the weary one that weeps." Lo! who would dare and disobey the graciou3 Master ? Nay, rather let us tempt the cold world's slight ; For is it not the Building-Master's pleasure That now we use our working tools aright? Plummet and square, level, rule and compass, all in order: What thought or work shall mar the march of Time 1 Then we, as wills the great and blest Immortal, Shall win that knowledge that is stamped Sublime ! — From " Tales of Araby "by W. R. Wills.
