TAMASESE'S CHIEFS TO MATAAFA'S CHIEFS. Loatuanua, May Ist, 1889.
To Your Highnesses, Pule Ma Aiga and Tuisamau andthose with you. Your Highnesses, — We have received the letter thab you wrote us on the 27th of last month, in which you informed us that it is your wish that we should make peace and stop the war between us, and this is our reply. When we get the decision of the Conference of three great Governments now being held afc the capital of Germany ; when we are well informed of this, then we will listen to you. For this reason it is our desire that we should have peace and stop the tigh ingf for the present. — We are, The Rulers. [This last letter bears upon the face of ifc a style not yet known by Samoan officials.] Sincel wrote tt»e foregoing an ugly rumour has gob abroad in reference to some correspondence between Dr. Steubel and the Tamasese party. From the report, which has been bVought to Apia by one of the Tamasese men, it appears that Steubel has advised Tamasese not to entirely disband his followers ; to only appear to do so ; to go to their homes and return in a few days, and hold them in readiness to attack Mataafa when the result of the Conference becomes known. This statement rests on mere rumour, but probably something has transpired to give rise to the report.
