KARANGAHAKE. (From our own Correspondent )

Crown G. M. Co.: This Company's Manager celebrated the Queen's birthday by having the grinding machinery set in motion. Everything Avorked well, but, the trial was too short to demonstrate the capabilities of the plant. The main driving belt (which formerly belonged to Railey's battery) proved to be rotten, and any further tps,ts will have to be | delayed until a new belt can be procured. The County Tramway has been put into working order and connected with No. 2 level, where a large tonasfQ of ore is lying in readiness for the mill. In the low level (contract tunnel) the reef baa been intersected, and the contractors are now driving for the winze being sunk from No. 2 level on the shot of gold. j When this connection has been made there will be a block of ground with | two hundred feet of backs all ready for Sfcoping. Cassel Gold Extracting Company : The progress of this Company's works has been retarded through want of timber, the sledge track (never vuy good) being almost impassible since the last rain, consequently the builder is not making such good headway as he could wish. The assay and smelting rooms have been completed, and the Company's carpenters have made a start to put the tanks together. The Manager expects to have the work in full swing in about four weeks (if wet weather does not interfere with his calculations by retarding the work). A lot of carting has yefc to be done and Railey's sledge track is not fit for either men or horses in wet weather. Imperial : In this mine No. 2 reef is being driven upon from the bottom of the winze, with a fair show of gold in the faoe. Kenilworth ; Shepherd's tribute :—: — A small parcel of ore is being forwarded to the Woodstock stonebreaker from this section of the mine. It is something near the same value as that sold to Mr Wick some months ago, which averaged over £100 per ton. Moore and party's tribute : A small parcel from this tribute section has been disposed of to the Manager of the Christchurch Company's Battery for experimental purposes. Woodstock : Mr Hcitman, Manager pf this Company's mine, is having o

parcel of ore broken out for shipment to London at an early uato ; he is also having the tramway connecting the mine with the hoppers put into working order. N«?w Plant : A small cxperimento.l plant is about to be erected in the Woodstock furnace house under the supervision of Mr Napior, the Oassel patent to be the process used, with a Lamberton mill for grinding purposes. Ivanhoe Battery : The repairs to the water-tfaco having been completed, this Baltary i 3 again at work on a parcel of tailings, Christchuroh Company's Battery : This Company's mill is kept going steadily on quartz from their own mine. Specimen Hill : I hear that an amalgamation has taken place between this and a neighbouring claim, for whioh a lease has been applied. A considerable amount of prospecting has been done on the ground y but so far without result.
