CAPTAIN ASHBY AT HOME. A FAVOURABLE REPORT ON THE NEW ZEALAND TRADE.
Captain Ashby is once more installed in his London office, and proposes to is«ue a little work entitled "New Zealand in 1889," giving the results of his observations during his recent tour of the colonies. Writing to an Auckland friend, he says :— " I will take this first opportunity to inform you that I arrived at Liverpool by the Cunard Company's steamer Etruria, in 6 days 6 hours. I made this my last tour round the world in live months and 17 days. I was very pleased to find New Zealand in a far better state than I was led to believe before leaving Home, and I have laid the facts before the country. I have written to the 'BritishAustralasian,' and expect it to appear in next week's paper. I have also written to the 'Graphic,' offering to lend them the photographs of Auckland in 1850, and the last one taken in 1888, showing the vast improvement during the time. You will also note I am publishing a book of my recent tour in New Zealand. This, with other matters 1 have in hand, I am certain will benefit your colony. 1 am already getting busy, and ere long I expect to advise you that I am sending you out a number of the better class of passengers to become settlers, with capital I will take this means of thanking you and the people of New Zealand for the facilities they afforded mo in getting over the country during my last visit there. I will also take this opportunity to thank the New Zealand Government for the railway privileges they gave me during the same time in passiug me over their lines, which enabled me to see all over the country and to get among farmers. I must not forget to thank the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand for the courtesy shown me in passing me in all their fine steamers, which enabled me to sco the coast and the harbours of New Zealand. The tone of the London press is better already ; they are my way of thinking, that New Zealand is the coming colony and the gem of the Southern Hemisphere. Just now thousands of emigrants arc teaming out to the States, but'not the class of people that would benefit New Zealand."
