"Scotch justice" would hardly seem to be of the same strain with what is known in this country as "jury justice." A magistrate in Edinburgh recently had a youngster brought before him for helping himself to two shillings. The lad was hungry and ragged, but that was no excuse, and he was sent to gaol for sixty days with hard labour. Following this case came a brute who had kicked, choked, beaten, and almost killed a woman. It was no fault of his that he did nob commit murder, as his actions showed )he had the will. He was found guilty, and would have been let off with a small fine bub for the fact that he had once before been convicted of a similar offonce. Accordingly the magistrate was obliged to impose a heavier penalty, which was twenty days' imprisonment. This and a long list of similar cases in Scotland is to be brought i to the attention ot Parliament.
