A CLEVER COMPROMISE. How a Woman Pacified a Troublesome Conscience.

In the letter of an ex-school teacher who is now travelling in Europe I read one of the most remarkable arguments on record. The lady ie a staunch Presbyterian, and, of course, viould yield no letter of the law even for the sights of Continental Europe. On account of much rain the stay of the little party at Pompeii was limited, and, most unfortunately, included Sunday. Tho lady in question of course could not think of such a thing as walking out and seeing the sights on Sunday. But the close proximity of the ancient city was undoubtedly an awful temptation. But she finally argued that Pompeii is only a graveyard, after all, and so she could take her walk, after all, and not break the letter of the law. But tho surprising thing about it is that one with such artfulness should unite such candour as shown in the confession.
