THE CORN TRADE. Auckland, May 22.
A mbetin'u of persons interested in the corn trade was held at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon to consider the question whether the buyer or seller should pay for baps in which grain Mas sold. Captain Colbeck occupied the chair, and there wore about a dozen others present. A letter from Mr J. Thompson, of Opotiki, was read, stating that a meeting of Opotiki farmers had agreed to ask the Chamber of Commerce to consider their grievance. At the end of 1885 a resolution was passed by the Chamber of Commerce that bags containing produce should not be paid for, but should be weighed in and paid for at tho samo rate a& tho grain. The writer stated that from 20,000 to 30,000 bags of grain left Opotiki every year, and a loss of 6d per sack represented £500 or £600. The Chairman said it was desirable that there should be some unanimity on the subject, and he moved, "That the resolution of ISBS be rescinded, and that in iufcure all bags containing grain of whatever description shall bo paid ior." Mi R. C. Cair moved as an amendment " That the resolution of 18S5 be coniirmed, and that no alteration be made." This was seconded by Mr Gunston. After some discussion the resolution was withdrawn, and Mr Carrs amendment was carried unanimously. It was also resolved to forward copies of the resolution passed to the Chambers of Commerce throughout New Zealand.
