MINING NEWS.
Thames, May 22. Saxox. — As the result ot the crushing operations at both batteries with 32 head of stampers during the past week, there are 580oz of amalgam on hand.
Cambria. — Uleaningupand retorting took place yesterday afternoon, for the excellent return of 61oz 15dvvt gold, which is the productof 21 loadsquartz and 181b of picked stone. The yield was reduced, on melting, to 61oz 4dwt. The whole of the quartz was obtained from the hangingwall leader in the drive and the leader in the intermediate level. In the drive on the hangingwall leader a break was met with a few days ago,, which had the effect of leaving the leader somewhat, but it was again picked up, and the drive is being pushed ahead upon it. No breaking-down has taken place since the break was met with.
New Alburnia.— The breaking-down of the Sons of Freedom reef in the drive at the battery level has taken place. The footwall of the reef varies from one to two feet in thickness, and a colour or two of gold were seen.
MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Cambria. — The mine manager reports that the intermediate dme below No. 3 level is in a distance of 25 feefc. It has junctioned with No 7 leader, if about three inches in thickness, and shows gold freely when broken down. The hanging wall lode at No 3 level through the heave has now five feet of ifc stripped, and looks well. A second slope westward of the Darwin old rise has been started. The lode is about 15 inches in thickness, and < carrying splendid mineral. As soon as the drive is more advanced west- • ward, the.leading sfcope will be commenced. Everything is looking highly favourable.
Lotfii Hand. — The mine manager reports that' the eastern drive in the Lone Hand section ot the mine is now in a distance of 35 feet. The leader in the face of the drive is about six inches in thickness, and colours of gold were seen through the quartz when breaking it- down. The leading stope east is along six feet. The leader in the face of this stope is four inches in thickness, and colours of gold were seen when breaking it down. The second | stope west is along six feet, and the ' leader in the face is four inches in thickness and showing dabs and colours of gold. The third stope east Manchester section of the mine is along 79 feet. The reef in the face of this stope is 9 inches thick, and colours of gold showing. The reef in the fourth stope, which is along 48 feet, is 12 inches thick, with gold showing through. The fifth stope east is along 26 feet. The reef is about IS inches thick, and shows dabs and colours of gold in breaking down. A start was made on Monday to lay down the points and make the necessary connections with Adelaide tramway at the low level tunnel..,
May Queen. — The mine manager reports th'afc thecontracfcors, .McDuff andparby, have completed their con ti act for cutting out. the site tor the engine house, and everything is now ready for the erection of the machinery.
New Albuksta. — The mine manager's report states : — For the past week the contractors have put in the drive on the Sons of Freedom reef 16 leet, and on Monday the manager had the quartz broken down up to the face. The lodo is from 1 foot up to 2 feet 6 inches in thickness, in some places open and baggy, but on the whole the quartz has a favourable appearance. The managerpicked out two or three pebbles from the centro of the lode showing gold close up to the face of the drive, and he is saving the best-looking portions of the reef. The * dig is composed of a white sandstone interlaced with quartz veins, consequently progress is slow. Tributers : — Jobe and party have crushed sixteen loads for 250z 16dwt, and Bridge's party 8, loads for a yield of 240z ldwt.
Norfolk. — This mine is situated ab Tararu Creek, and the mine manager sends a most favourable report of the progress made during the past fortnight. Work is being done on . three levels, and speaking of the reef on the first one the manager says, "The reef is so large in the face of No. 1 drive that I am inclined to believe that a large reef is coming through the hangingwall, making a junction with the reef we are working on." There is good promise on both the other levels, and the mine altogether is making good progress.
Saxon. — A telegram from the mine manager states that sSooz of amalgam are on hand for the week.
