DE\TH OF MAORI CHIEF. Maihi Paraono Kawhiti, a great Ngapuhi chief, died at bis residence at Waiomio early this morninsr rather suddenly though he had been ailing for some time.
PROPOSED COAL PROSPECTING COMPANY. A large meeting of the residents and business people at Kawakawa took place last night for the purpose of forming a Coal Prospecting Company to woik laud adjoining the Pakaraka estate.
THE CHARGES OF THEFT PREFERRED AGAINST VOLUNTEERS—DISMISSED. At the Police Court to-day the charge of stealing a keg of brandy preferred by -Mr Porter, of Mercer Hotel, against seamen Thornton, Waitemata ' Na'vala, wa3 not proved. The charges of stealing an acccrdeon" preferred aarainst Buttle, Waitemata, Navals, and, Costello, Onehunga Navals, was also, dismissed These alleged thefts were said to have taken place on the occasion of the return of the Volunteers from, encampment at Hamilton.
ACTIVITY IN MINING SHARES. There were buyers of 'Woodstocks today at 4s 6d ; Crown at 4s 3d ; Silverton 9d 5 Saxons sold at 10s,.
