A NEW KIND OF SPELLING-BEE.
The following is a new and agreeable way of passing an o«ld half hour or so : On* 1 of the company begins by naming the first letter of the alphabet, " A ;" tho player sitting next to him on the left hand then ad. is a letter — any letter, pro vided that, though it will form part of a word, it shall not itself make a complete word. The third person adds another letter, and so the game proceeds until a player has been compelled to pronounce a letter which, with those that have gone before, it, will form a word ; whereupon he or she will be promptly cnlled upon to fnrnish a forfeit or tine of some sort. The second letter" B " is then chosen by the next player, and the game goes on as before. For instance, say we commence with "a ;" next player says " &."' Evidently ab is paTt of a word, but not a won! in itself. The third player gives" it, " and the fourth " s "; he might have said "t" but this wmld not have answered his purpose, for it would have made the word " abut" and brought him in for a fine or forfeit. He thinks that while saving himself he has cornered his next friend, but No. 5 quietly says "i" ami passes this growing word to the next player, who adds to it the letter '' t\" thereby forcing the seventh player — who has no choice — to say u c" ami so com pleting a word, the word " abusive," to pay the penalty.
