Alassowah, May 10. Later news is to hand confirming the previous reports that the Negus of Abyssinia has teen kil ed by »he Dervishes. The battles between ihe Dcrvisl.es and the Ne^us continued for three dajs, and there was very great slaughter. On the firs! d,iy, the Negus gained an advantage over trw: euum, and captured many prisoner*. On the following d-iy, row ever, t^e Dervishes surprised the Negus, and succeeded in wounding him, with the result that he was thrown into a rnging fever. While in this condition, the Negus beheaded 2,000 capthes and heaped the corpses in an imn.ense pile together. Before ten o'clock on the thiid day, ihe Negus dressed himself in sumptuous robes, and mounting on his horse declared himself the elect of God and invincible. He was, however, wounded again anil killed. His army were routed and 30,000 troops slaughtered. It is reported that the Dervishes were commanded by an Englishman.
Zamzibar, May 10. Captain WismaUn, with his expeditionary foce of 900 men, attacked Bushire, the rebel chief, at Bagamoyo, where he was encamped <nith 600 foilowers. Bushire was badly beaten and fled, and eighty were k'iled. Regarding Captain Wismann's intentions, the " Vossische Zeitung " learns lhat the Imperial Commissary will fix his head - quarters in Dar-es-Salam, and from that place as a basis endeavour to re-conquer Pangani, Saadani, and Bagamoyo to the north, and Kilway and Lindi to the south. The object of the five steamers bought by the captain is to convey his troops along the coast between the places mentioned. There are in all 61 Europeans engaged in the expedition.
Ottawa, May 9. Mr Gisborne, a Canadian electrician, has published a proposal to lay a cable along the coast of the Pacific Ocean to Australia. Roughly speaking, the route vouM be from Columbia to Atu, one of the Aleutian Islands ; thence to Japan and Luzon, one of the Philippines, whence it would stretch across to New Guinea, and connect with Australia at^Port Darwin. The length is estimated at 6,600 miles, and the co&t at seven million dollars. The proposition has been favourably received.
Brussels, May 9. The Belgian Government, in a note to the Great Powers, proposes that a conference be held on Congo affairs.
