THE SUGAR INDUSTRY. SUPPLY FOR SOUTHERN PORTS. Auckland, May 9.

The Chief Commissioner of Railways, Mr McKerrow, was interviewed this morning by Mr J, Philson, on behalf of the Colonial Sugar Company, whose local refinery is at Birkenhead. Hestated that thoCom|jany had made arrangements for supplying sugar to all the principal merchants in Nelson and Wellington, and also the requirements of ocher ports, and asked, on behalf of the company, for a reduction of rates over the portage portion of the line between Auckland and Onehunga. He urged in support of this request that it was likely a very large increase of business would accrue to the Railway Department, if the concession were granted, and that otherwise, the company might find it worth their while to send their sugar by the East, Coast and North Cape, in order to supply the West Const ports. Mr McKerrow promised that the subject would be carefully considered by himself and the other Commissioners.

The " Pail Mall Gazette " has the following : — Statistics recently published show that in New Zealand out of the total area of 66,000,000 acres about 34,000,000 acres of Crown lands still remain open for selection. It appears that the exports of agricultural and farm produce have advanced of late years by veritablo leaps and bounds. Thus, whereas the value of these exports was in 1875 only £262,930, they had augmented in 18S7 to the very large total of £1,312,475. In regard to the average yield of crops, we find that the extent of land under wheat in j 1888 amounted to 357,359 acres. The aggregate produce of the wheat crop was estimated at 9,424,059 bushels, and the, estimated produce realised 26 37 bushels per acre. The returns as to pastoral pursuits are eminently gratifying. The number of horses in the colony are returned at 187,382; of sheep, 15,040,000; and of cattle, 855,368. These figures are exclusive of the live stock bolonging to the aboriginal natives.
