I am sorry to have to state that operations on tho Taupiri Extended Company's shaft have been stopped again, after all the difficulties had apparently been overcome When the cylinders reached a hard bottom it was generally thought everything was safe, but apparently the pressure from the outside has been too much for the strength of the iron cylinders, as several sections gave way and split, necessitating filling tho shaft up again with water to prevent a cave-in. In the meantime operations ha\e been stopped and the men paid off. Messrs Scherft and Ryan arrived to-day for the purpose of seeing to things.
