EDWARD HANLAN. ARRIVAL OF THE EX-CHAMPION WORLD'S OARSMAN. Auckland, May 8.

By the s.s. Tarawera to-day the noted Canadian oarsman, Edward Hanlan, exchampion oarsman of the world, whose name has been for years a household word in aquatic and sporting circles, arrived lrom Sydney, and was met on the Queen - street Wharf by a number of members of the local boating fraternities and by Mr M. Gallagher, of the Imperial Hotel, whose guest he will be during his stay in Auckland. Since his last important race on the Parramatta Mr Hanlan has been located in Sj'dney, and also made a visit to Tasmania, giving aquatic exhibitions at Hobarc. He intends returning to his Toronto home in a few mouths, leaving the Australasian eoloniss finally, but before doing so he will in all probability make a tour ot New Zealand, visiting all the various localities of interest. The length of his stay in Auckland is as yet undecided, but he will most likely remain here for over a month, and during that time will, if suitable arrangements) can be made, give exhibitions of his well-known skill as an oarsman, in the form of an aquatic carnival on some suitable sheet of water, jtrobably Lake Takapuna. Mr Gallagher has taken the matter in hand and no , doubt our local boating enthusiasts will do all that lie& in their power to make the event successful. Mr Banian is prepared to pull against 8-oared racing boats and 4-oarcd ones for a course of say half-a-mile, or scull any man in the colony over a two or threo mile course, giving his opponent say half-a-minute start. If the aquatic exhibition eventuates he will also di&play his skill in " walking on the water," and will meet the local oarsmen in any endeavour to promote the success of the affair. During his stay in the city he will, he says, be most willing to visit tho sheds of the various boating clubs, and give the members the benefit of his long and varied experience in sculling in all parts of the world, and offer suggestions as to the rig of their boats, etc. In fact, while here he will bo only too glad to do anything he can to give our local scullers wrinkles in the science which he has made his life profession. This evening Mr Hanlan will be piesent as an invited • guest at checomplitnenbaiysmokingconcert tendered in the Imperial Hotel by our local athletes to Professor Carrollo, who also arrived from Sydney by the &.s, Tarawera to-day.
