DEATH OF A WARRIOR.
CHmsTCKUBCH, May 6. The famous old Maori chief, Aperihama te Aiha, was buried at Kaiapoi on Sunday in the native cemetery adjoining the pa, with great ceremony. The death brought relations and friends from nearly all the Maori settlements in the South Island. Tangis were held during the past week, and the funeral was attended by great numbers of Europeans as well as Maoris. The old chief was supposed to be 80 years of age. He performed prodigies of valour when Te Rauaporo and the North. Island Maoiis made their historical raid on the tribes inhabiting the South Island, massacring natives at Kaiapoi and the neighbouring pas. Aperihama was further distinguished as being the first Maori convert to Roman Catholicism in the South. The funeral rites were performed by Roman Catholic Bishop Giimes and Fathers O'Connor and Malue.
