MINING NEWS.
Thames, May 3. Saxon. — Tho main reef at No. 5 level is somewhat split up at present, which is apparently caused by a water-course, and the quartz does not look quite so well as formerly. Otherwise, theio i-i no change to report from this level or in the various stopes over No. 2 level, the quartz from which is shaping at tho battery for a return similar to the last. Cambkia. — The managor (Mr Baker) has now made a commencement to open up an intermediate level on the leader, upon which it will be remembered the last winze was eunk a short time ago from No. 3 level. A rise is also in progress on the hangingwall leader, west of what is known as No. 3 crosscut, and upon which a large block of ground is available in the event of the quartz proving payable. The leader carries excellsnt minerals. Lone Hand. — The reef was broker/ down in the leading stopo, when dabs of gold were freely seen in the stone and about 51b of good picked stone obtained. Colours of gold wore also seen freely in the reef in the eastern drive. Crushing is proceeding, and the return promises to be highly remunerative. New Aijjutinia. — it has now been proved beyond doubt that the reef recently intersected is the Sons of Freedom. It is 2\ feet thick and carries fair mineral, but no gold has been seen. Nice blocky white sandstone is now showing in the face. Warden's Court. —At the Warden's Court yesterday the following licensed holdings were forfeited for non -working : - Marototo South G. & S.M. Co , Limited, Surplus Nos. 1 , 2, and 3, costs 27s ; Brogan Nos. 1 and 2, Whangamata ; Observer Nos. 1,2, and 3, Whangamata; Marototo Extended, Nos. 1 and 2 ; Teutonic, The Excelsior, The Tyer, Calliope, The Nelson, all known as the North Marototo Amalgamated Leases G. and S. M. Co. , Limited ; The Ohinemuri ; Remuera, Marototo ; Crown Prince, Marototo ; Spade Guinea, Marototo ; Darwin, Marototo ; Walk Over, Waiomo ; Sydney, Waiomo ; Shotover, Karangahake ; Silver Leaf, Nos. 1 and 2, Marototo ; Komata ; Silverton water-race, Waihi. .Several other plaints were adjourned, including one for the forfeiture ot the Sons of Freedom licensed holding, Moanataiari Creek. The following applications of Auckland interest were also dealt with : — S. T. George, Thistle special claim, Waihi, granted subject to the approval of the Minister of Mines ; James McGuire, Australia, licensed holding, Waitekauri, granted on similar conditions ; Robert Lawrie, Nymph, Tararu, adjourned to 16th inst. j Roderick McDonald Scott, May Queen, Waiokaraka, adjourned to 23rd inst. ; Thomas Russell, Victoria, Waihi, adjourned to 30th inst. ; John Roberts and others, Mermaid, adjourned 16th inst. ; Peter C. Hansen, Kuranui No. 5, adjourned 16th inst. : Maurice Kelly, Dives, granted ; Charles Alexander, Norman, granted ; Thos. H. Barclay, Lone Hand, adjourned 16th inst. : Jas. McGuire, machine site, adjourned 16th inst. ; J. W. Walker, water -race, Waihi, withdrawn ; and Robert Connoll, water-race, adjourned to 16th inst. I Thames, May 4. New Albubnia. — The body of quartz cut a few days ago in the eros&cut at the battery level proves beyond doubt to be the Sons of Fredom reef. It is about 2\ feet in thickness, and carries the tamegood mineral, although no gold has been seen in the quartz. The contractors have finished their allotted distance, and another contract for a further 50 feet has been let to them. Saxon — The main reef is somewhat split up in both hillward and seaward drives. At No. 5 level the No. 2 reef has been broken down for nearly a length, stripped, and colours of gold were seen. There is no change worthy of mention in the working. May Queen. — Seventeen tenders were received this afternoon for excavating the site for the engine house, the lowest being £5 2s 6d. and the highest £20 Is 6d. Mr T. H. Russell gives the value of the 600oz of bullion brought down by Mr J. W. Walker for tho Waihi Company at 22s 6d per oz. Waihi Gold Mining Company. —Mr J. W. Walker, manager, has brought down 600oz of bullion for lodgment in the Bank. The assay value of the same will not be to hand for a day or two but it is expected to be fair value. Thames, May 6. Trenton. — Four tenders were received by the manager on Saturday for sinking a wellholo 8 feet in this Company's shaft, the lowest being that of J. Wilson at ±.2 18s per foot, and the highest £4 2s sd. The drive from the bottom of the shaft has been put in a distance of about 27 feet, but progress is somewhat slow, as the country continues very hard The crosscut from the Cambria drive at No 4 level is penetrating an excellent description of sandstone, and is already in 20ft. It is expected that the Saxon reef will be intersected within 100 feet. Saxon. — There is no change to rsport. Cambria. — When breaking down fche leader on the rise over the winze sunk by tho Moanataiari Company on Saturday, a parcel of 81b of picked stone was obtained, and 61b from the intermediate drive between Nos. 3 and 4 levels. ] Trenton. —The western drive, upper level, has been driven a distance of 20 feet in four days from the main- crosscut with the rock- borer. Lucky Hit. — Bell and party have completed a crushing of 301b of picked stone tor the return of 15oz 16dwt melted gold. Royal Oak Mine (Coromandel). — During the past week there has been a large reef in hand showing a liotle gold in each breaking down, from which about 201b. picked stone was obtained. To-day the reef is rather broken owing to a break in the footwall, but the ground continues to show every indication of 'the reef making gold as wrought on. There is now on hand about 701b. of picked stone.
