WHEAT IN VICTORIA. MILLS ON SHORT TIME.
FIGHT AT VVADY HALFA. London, May 1.
Melbourne, May 2. The statistical authorities have not quite made up their minds whether the surplus wheat available for expoit has already left the colony or not. Millers are declining to pay the price asked for wheat, and many mills are, consequently, running on short time. The u Age " considers the balance remaining of the new crop is nominally 1700 tons, but says that a considerable quantity of old wheat having been brought forward, there is little danger of absolute scarcity. The " Argus'' on the other hand, estimates that there will be 26,000 tons of wheat available for shipment.
News has been received that the cavalry engaged the Dervishes at Wady Haifa, and thirty-two of the latter were killed.
