KARANGAHAKE. [From our own Correspondent.]
i Karangaitake, Monday. Ivanhoe auilTiuro: Tl*e proprietors of this mine are keeping the battery going (one shift), on stuff from their own mine. An additional Mack ay pnu has just been erecteil by Messrs Price, Bros, The old Ivanhoo battery is pounding away on a large parcel of low gr.ide or.From White and party's (Ivanhoe) tribute. The stuff is easily broken, and half ounce t > the ton would pay, judging, however, from tho show on the plates it should turn out something better than half ounce. Woodstock : Aft^r being shut down for some months, the Maria Lode (in this Company's ground), has been let on tribute to Messrs McLouajhry and Comes. Kenilworth, Shepherd's Tribute : Sinking has stopped for tho present, and a level started from the bottom of (he winze to drive out to the surface, the leader is small, but prospects well. The lower section of the mine has been re-let on tribute to Moore and party, who made a start to-day. Imperial : Mr Clements informs me that he has tapped the winze on No. 2 leader, but as none of the quarks will be broken down until the timbering is completed, and a paddock prepared, I can say nothing as to to the quality of the ore. Crown G.M. Co.: Since my last this Company have made good progress with the different works, both at the mine and battery. Tho framework for the gu'nding mills is in a forward state, and a few weeks should see them in position. The low level (contract tunnel), i 9 in a distance of 130 feet, in very tight country. Cassel Gold Extracting Co. : Mr OBrien, tho contractor for the erection of this Company's plant, has got the workshop and storeroom almost completed', the main building is commenced, and is expected to be in readiness for the fittings in four or five weeks. The cottages for the men are now completed and occupied. These houses (along with that of Captiin Coward, manager of the Crown Mines), form quite a little township. Home months ago the Ohinemnri County Council got tho promise of a grant of £1000 to be expended on what is known as Butler's road, but up to the present nothing has been done to take advantage of said grant. The opinion of many Karangahake residents is that tho money would be thrown away if thus expended, and that the proper place for the road is a continuation of the Mackaytown- Karangahake road, keeping down by the river, and joining • the Owharoa road, near the Rahu. A trial survey of this line hag been made by Mr Kenny, County Engineer, who estimates the cost something over £2000, but I hear that an offer has been made to the Council to construct the Road for £1400. Mr Aitken, Thames County Engineer, who was over the proposed lino of road today, estimates tho cost at £1500.
