The secretaiy of a gold mine in India having sent an imperative deiminri to aeeitain shareholder for the pa\ merit of a " call," jeeeivcd the following reply :—: — '•Dear Sir, — I have your letter of this day. find note that your directors propose ti) jijoceed against me. Your prospecfns stated that one of the objects of your company was to " seek, win, and work gold in India and elsewhere." — viz.. out of me. I can assure you. however, that I am not nn niiiifcrous vein ; the only lode I possess is h load of debt, and as a gold luine I shall be a failure Your prospectus e«tiinnted a yield of loz. of gold ppr ton on 30,000 tons of qnaitz ciushed per ar.ni n — £10.500 Rtei ling per annum. Yon may " cinpli " me, but you will find that I shall not ;\ ield nearly so much. My peisun (which, for the put pose of this calculation, may bo consideied quartz) weighs, roughly speauin?, ten stone, and, if crushed immediately, I estimate that it would j iel J as follows : — Gold, nil ; silver, 3s , co >pfr, 4jd — total, 3« 4 jd.
