The Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE. 'This above all— to thine own gelf be true, And it most follow as the night the day Thou canst not then be false to any man.' Shakespeare. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 1889.
Tub prospects of iNew Zealand have wonderfully improved within the past few months, ami the present outlook for the Colony is most cheering According to established custom the exact figures relating to the items of receipts and expenditure for the financial year, ended Match 3lst, would not be published until they appear in the annual Financial Statement, But it has this week been announced that, not only will it be shown that the expendituie has been kept well within the limit, but that there will be a surplus, and that to the substantial amount of fully £50,000, available towards reducing the indebtedness of the previous financial year. This announcement will come as an agreeable surprise, and be a source of the <»reatest satisfaction to all both within the Colony, and also at Home, except perhaps to the few, who apparently take a keen delight in depreciating the prospects of New Zealand and the value of its securities. It •will be readily admitted that a few months ago the probability of their being a surplus wns very small indeed ; in fact it, was generally f eai ©d there would bu a heavy deficit. But in a country with such wondei fnl natural advantages, such immense agricultural ami mineral wealth, and such boundless resources generally as New Zealand, it is truly wonderful what an improvement can take place within even the short space of a few mouths. To be sure the fact must not be overlooked that the Colony has been specially favoured this year. Whitat ifi Australia generally fearful droughts ha^o prevailed, causing a great failure of crops and the loss cf dtock to an extent truly appalling ; whilst devftSting fires have prevailed over large areas of country, adding to the general destruction and ruin — New Zealand has been blessed v/ith an abundant harvest, and suffered fiom neither di ought nor n'reto any appreciableextent. Then again the prices of wool, com, and dairy produce, etc., have all advanced considei ably. and th< j prospects for ngncultuiists greatly brightened; and the general improvement occasioned by a good harvest jiiul impioved prices will make itself fell on eveiy hand. The mci eased demand iov land, and enhanced value thereof, is also a matter of much satisfaction, as showing restored confidence in the Colony. Indeed the large increase m the item of hind revenue obtained i>y Government within the post financial year, has undoubtedly greatly assisted in bringing ■ about, to satisfactory a condition us now ixim.s vutli lespectto Colonial finances. Jt is to be ho[Kj 1 now that such an impiovi'inent v. ith respect to the general prosperity of the Colony has set in, thar. it v. ill not be ngiin cheeked by recklesb boiiDwiui;, and cxtiavngcnt exppndituu\ It will be lcvidily admitted the
present Government have <lono a or>od iVal in the way of retrench nipnt and Civil Sowi.ee re-ori?anisation, but a ftreafc deal still remains' to be don<\ Lirt;c savings ran yo(* lie made in the matter of adlv.inistration, without affecting its efficiency, No other country under the sun could, avo believe, have borne up under ihe reckless expenditure of public money as New Zealand has done ; and wo know of no country the prospects of which are brighter, if its affairs arq only faithfully and judiciously administered.

We take *ho following fiotn tho De'iiot Free Pi ess of the 2Gt ! i January last :: — '• A recent law auit in Nev/ York w,w ha<sed on the followinsr story : Armed with lelteis of introduction to sevoial English capitalists, Henry R. C.issel, the inventor of a.n elect' ochemical process for extracting cold from ore, sailed from Now York for England a few veara ,*go. The letters were given him by George B. Ellery, and it wars agreed that if, by incsnH of these missivps, Cassel effected a i»ale of hi.s patent, lie would pay to Eilery h commis.sion of 5 ]>ov cent of the amount renlised. On the trip act ohm tho ocean Mr Cas«el anya he openetl, by mistake, a lettor to the editor of the Investoi'a Guaidian, in London, htating that Senator Jonea, of Novada, was booh to depart for England, and that a good commission could b(3 made by inducing the Senator to invest in English patents, Mr Cassel Hays he was so disgusted on reading thia that he leßolved not to present the letters. One of them was addressed to Joseph Aronaon, a brother of Rudolph Aronwon, of the the Casino. This, it if! claimed, was not used, but Mr Cassel formed the acquaintance of Joseph Aionson, who introduced him to a Mr Leipman, through whom the patent was sold to a Glasgow Hyndicate. The amount paid was £10,000 in cash, and £50,000 in .shares'. The busiucHS prospered, and the shares w*>nt above par Mr Eilery claimed that a commission of S l OO,OOO was due him, and sued for the amount. The trial of the case before Justice Lawrence / and a jury in the Supreme Couit, resulted in a disagreement. The case will be tiied aguin."
