MINING NEWS.
Thames, April 13. Cambria. —As the result of the past fortnight's operations the managor yesterday banked 290z 6d\vb melted gold from 43 loads of quavtv. crushed at the Company's battery. Lone Hand —As you liavo alroadj beon apprised by telegraph, operations in tins mine on behalf of the recently-formed Company were commenced yesterday under the management of Mr H. W. Moore. In the City of Manchester section two stopes— the third and fourth — have been manned, and a start will bo made in a day or two with another, so that three will then be in full swing upon the lode. The manager has also commonced driving in the Lone Hand section upon the Adelaide reef, in a westerly direction, or seaward, nnd about 60 feeb have to be traversed ere the ' ' break "is reached. A ri3e has also been started upon the same icef over this drive, with a view to making preparations for stoping, the available height upon the leef being about 30ft. As it was from this reef that the rich specimens recently exhibited ! in Auckland wore obtained, it will bo seen ! that there is every likelihood of the mine proving highly remunerative almost immediately. It may bo mentioned that the manager does not intend to break down any i of the reef in the drive for a day or two, as , a few feet will first be shipped. Alburnja. — The Manager has accepted the tender of Ensor and party to day, at 13s lid per foot, for extending the battery level and crosscut a further distance of 50 feet. Saxon. - The 1561b picked ston lately obtained came from the bangit. fe /wall side of main reef, !No. 5 level. The reef is s£ft in thickness at the point where cut through, and is very hard stone. The mine manager expects the 5 loads of quai tz lately forwarded to this battery and crushed will when all cleaned up, from the way it is now shaping, go about loz to 1 }oz per load. Saxon. — Another parcel of 201b picked stone was obtained to-day from tho main reef No. 5 levCl. Saxon. — 201b of picked stone were attained to-day when further breaking down the main reef at No. 5 level. Tho manager states, under date of yesterday, that apparently theie is no distinct run of gold ; it appears to make in bunches. TJoing sea\\ard towards the winze the reef is fully sft 6in. in thickness. As the drive gets nearer the winze it is expected that there will be a chance of getting more picked stone. The last 20ft. of the reef on the winze was not broken down, but the indications in thia direction aie very encouraging, a good deal of stratamata and ruby silver being met with. A yield of 7oz. of gold from the five loads crushed is certain. The general stuff is shaping well at the battery. Saxon. — The main reef at No. 5 level, from which the 151bs of picked stone telegraphed yesterday were obtained, has been penetrated and found to be sft in thickness Driving has been started upon it both ways. Norfolk Claim. — Thio claim, situated in Tararu Creek district, hab been taken o\er by a company in Auckland. The ground has been proved to bo auriferous, and from the excellent quartz broken out recently by Mr hice the prospects of the company are Certainly good and they have acquired a property which if developed should yield satisfactory returns. Royai- Oak (Coromandel). —Theie X nothing ot any importance to report for the past week. The reef still continue? large throughout, and has been broken down the length of the ri&e without showing any metal, although the indications have been favourable. In the west end of the rise the reef is more solid, about nine inches in thickness where a cross head has come in. The tributerjj are at present working on No. 2 and the cross reef ; they are not getting anything. The cross reef is looking well going south. The ton of general stufl and six pounds of crushed stono by the tributers gave a return of 740Z5 retorted gold. — Peter Reid. Thames, April 15. Luni: Hand. — Operations in this Company's mine are progressing satisfactorily. The dri\e on the Adelaide reef in the Lone Hand section is passing through a splendid doscription of sandstone, and excellent headway is being made, a length of 7ft of the reef having already been stripped. The manager, however, is leaving the reef standing, and no breaking down is likely to take place until Wednesday or Thursday. (iood progress is al&o being made with the rise on the same veef over this drive ; but here also no quartz has yet been broken down. Colours ot gold are seen in the stopes in the Manchester section of the mine, and there is little doubt that the quartz coming to hand will prove payable. It is intended to commence a low level tunnel at an eaily date, and Mr R. McDonald Scott was here from Auckland on Saturday in connection with toe matter, but it has not yet been decided whether the extension of the Adelaide tunnel will be proceeded with, or a new level put in on the Company's own account. Trenton. — During the past week the Cambria No. 4 level drive has been extended Bft by means of the rock borer, while the contractors from the Company s own. shaft have driven sft. Both drives are in veiy hard country. Saxon. — The fortnightly cleaning up and retortiner is taking place to-day. New Manukau. — Driving has been commenced we-fcward at No. 4 level along the " break," for the purpose of opening up a block on Mulligan's leader. The only other work in progress is the last stopc below No. 3 level on Mulligan's leader. The quartz coming to hand from here is of payable grade. Camjuria. — The stono knocked down in crosscut at foot of winze looks very pro mieing. Lone Hand. — Clood dabs and colours of gold ha»e been seen in a small stringer that is being carried along in the dig stripping the reef in the western drive, Lone .Hand section of the mine. The reef has not bee.i brokeD down yet. Trenton. — There appears to be a slight improvement for the better coming in the face of the 350-feet level. New Fearnought. — The reef has become within the last four feeb more solid, and is now carrying a well-defined footwall. The quartz broken down during the week continues to look very promising for gold. The winze has attained a depth of 14ft. and is passing through a splendid class of country. Saxon. — The prospects on the new level are very encouraging, and a little gold is being seen freely. New MoANATAiAKt. — The quartz now being worked through on the drive through the big reel at No. 4 level is of a much more kindly description than any yet met with here. Caledonian. — Three pounds of picked stone were obtained this afternoon from the intermediate level below No. 2 level.
