SAMOA, MARCH, 1889.

There lay grim, frowning castles on tho restless deep— Tho pride of man, engines of his fretful power, Whoso fearful mechanism might crush and Bweep Away a nation in some ovil hour ! And brave men walked their decks in pi'ide, -Secure in might, defiant in their power. And then— A breath from Him whoso arsenals, braced o'er With restless winds, flerce-flashing flame, and dolugo brands, And lo ! man's pride are toys upon tho hissing roar Of created waters ! Then men's claspless hands Outstretch for help— ay! ships and men Are but broken stubble on tho coral strands! Yet 'mid tho frowning cloud, and hissing waves —behold ! The God-endowed, majestic, daring soul of man, Up-towering hearenward! Should feuds thro' new or old, Bar eoul from soul ? Nay ! past the thunder* ran The ringing cheer from doomed men, As the few escape thehmMoano's dire ban. Wo all are kin— when God draws near with naked blade, VVo have no foe ; and all are brother.?, black or white, And ten times noble y* who lent your aid To pluck late foes from ocean's darkest night. We praise— noy I bless your brotherhood; For love is conquoror over wrong and right. Now, as we stand dismayed, and o'en the dead men weep, A holy psalm conies lo each soul ; it sweetly rings As clear as silver bells across the deep, Telling of coming days, when sweet peace sings To armed men, fair songs of rest. And Lovo i crowned the holy king of kings W. R. Wills.
