MINING NEWS.
Thames, April 5. Saxon*. —This morning" the mine manager wired :—" Holed through to winze No. 5 level. Good ventilation now." Caledonian. — The mine manager wired to-day ;—"; — " Cut a cros£>-reef in contractor 1 .? drive, Ofcago section, No. ,1 level. Good colours of good seen now in intermediate level." Caledonian. — The manager has 4 started to drive on the intermediate winze below No. 2 level npon No. 2 reel lull ward of No. 3 winze, his object being to intersect the junction with No. I reef. A few colours of gold were seen ye&lerday when breaking the quartz down. The Saxon drive at No. 5 level ba3 hole" through to the winze. A start will be mad c on Monday to break down the main reef. Thames, April 6. Saxon. — The drive at No. 5 level is now in almo&fc sufficiently far io connect with the winze sunk from the level above, and it is expected that communication will be effected to-day. Good colours of gold are seen in the quartz being broken out from the various sbopes, and it continues to shape payably at the battery. i Caledonian — Satisfactoryheadwav is still being made by the contractors with the drive ,atNo. 1 level towards the Otago section. No quartz hae been broken down during the [ last tew days. A few colours of gold have been seen in the footwall portion of No. 2 reef. May Queen. — The contractors have now timbered up a shaft for 16ft, and sunk a further 7 or 3 feet, which will be timbered up \ this afternoon. Lone Hani*.— Mr K. McDonald Scott will arrive here to morrow on business ooni neefced with this Company, when the manager (Mr H, W. Moore) will officially take over the control of the property. * Silvkkton. — The stuif now coming to hand is good general dirt. Gold can ibe seen every bieaking down. The mine manager will shortly start a drive noi'th from the bottom of winze to pick up the run of gold that Tiibutor Moore sunk some 6 feefc on in the level. Royal Oak Mini: (Coromandel). — Thei-eis j nothing of importance to report from this mine for the past week. A large portion of the reef broken down, but not showing up to expectations, although the indications were most favourable. The reef continues to look in line of the run, showing cross j mineral veins from both walls. The tributers are ptill working on the cross reef I without getting anything ; they are also crushing about one ton general stuff taken from different leads. The result will be known to-morrow. — S. REtd. Thames, April 8. New Alburnia. — The contractors have driven 20ft. at the battery level. The ground is very tight. Saxon. — Communication having been effected between the drive at No. 5 level and the winze, a .start has been made to drive hillward between the two lodes. It is more than likely that the manager will commence bieaking down the main reef today. There is no change worthy of mention in the various stopes, which continue to produce quartz of good payable quality, upon which the full force of stampers at the Company's battery is employed. Cambkia.— Mr William Baker has been appointed manager, lie, Mr Mooie, lesigned. New Fearxought. — Good progress is being made in sinking. The reef continues to go down strong, and is improving in appearance. The quartz broken is of a kindly nature, and looks very promising for gold, although none as yet has been observed. A splendid class of sandstone country has been met with on the footwali side. The winze is down a depth of ten feet.
