THE MESSIAH'S COMING, Opinions Expressed by Leading Hebrews in New York.
This astdnishing statement from the lips of |the most distinguished and noblo of Jews has created "a profound sensation among both Christians and 'Hebrews. A number of" the latter in New ' York have given their views. ' > Rabbi Joseph, 1 chief of the rabbis in New York City, said to aN ew York 'Evening Telegram ' reporter :• — 1 ' The orthodox Jews do not believe that tlie Messiah has come. This undertaking of Baron Hirsch's in Paris is an old one, only worked under a new method. In olden timos kings and ' emperors 1 tried to bring Jews and Christianstogether by means of force. ' The Jews' were roasted on hot irons, put,vin cages with' 1 blood-thirsty animals, without' success. When you try' to compel a strong.-mihded' 'person to deny his religion, he will fight for' ib 'even to death. > , •■ . < .u< 'Now, Baron 'Hirsch knows this^'yetf tries this new method of spending money 1 arid' using influence. Hethinks that he can unite
the f Jewish 'arid' Christian people, " In^my opinion^' Mr Hirsch's intentions are* good, but 1 he cdiV never' unite tHe' 7 people 'in- that 'wayi ""•'■ • « • , !•"• "•' l ' r » i ' 1 "'-" '/;': "I believe, as, all ■'orthodox Jews 1 do;-' that Hirach is not the Messiah for 'whom we have been' waiting- for 'over 2,000 years/] ' The Messiah 1 has nob' ; comeV Befdre'His- coming we shall '"see *' sighs in the sky,-' peculiar movements 'of the clouds and other stfa'n'ge tilings which we will' hot' know about until He 'appears among us Baron Hirsch' is not the Messiah. ?s ' • . " / " ' '/■*' ' ' Professor Felix Adler, the most learned of the liberal Hebrews'^ said, the Messiah' had^nob'come'yet. "Ample'time and'hotice will ' be'giv^n,'. he said', * before He makes' His appearance.' ' ' , ' Rabbi Barnetb SUbermann said :— ' * Ko/ 1 do not think Baron Hirschis the Messiah. - He may be spending his money to make the ignorant Israelites believe that he is uhe long looked-tor Messiah, but the more intelligent Hebrews know better. I will no ( t' say that Baron J Hirsch is a philanthropist for notoriety's sake; but when he sets' himself upas the Messiah it is time for people to cry a halt.' , The senior member of the Broad-street house of J. and W. Seligman' and Co. ' said :' — * At the present moment I hardly know what to say. ' Baron Hirsch is ' a reliable banker and gentleman, and I should deem his personal statement, so far as he is concerned, as his honest expression of opinion. As the matter now stands, Ipre'fer to await iurther particulars before explaining fully what I think of him and the allegations attributed to his authorship.'
