Saxon. — The crosscut at No. 5 level is now just about in the requisite distance to meet the winze sunk from No. 4 level, and communication should be effected any shift. Colours of gold continue to be seen when breaking down the reef in the A'arious stopes. Trenton. — ItisexpecttdthattheCambria No. 4 level crosscut will be cleared up to the face by to-morrow, when driving will be at once commenced by means of the rock borer. Lone Hand. — The appointment of Mr H. VV. Moore to the management ot this Company's mine has given general satisfaction, although it will probably necessitate his resigning hi& position as manager ot the Cambria, which he has held for some years pa»b. Mr Moore will at once leporb on the best mode of conducting operations, in the future in the Lone Hand mine, and as soon as this is considered and dealt witJi by the directors in Auckland, operations will be commenced on a systematic scale. A.s mentioned in a former report, theCompa.iy can at once start upon highly remuneiat ye quartz. The Makototo District. The onl} work proceeding in the M.n-ototo district is in what was originally known as Mcßrenn'nor the Prospectors* Claim, and which was afterwards floated into a company in Sydney. The manager has put up a rise from the low le\el (B) to the surface, a distance ot 120 ft, and has now made a start to open out upon the lode both ways, at a point some 30fb about the B drive. One of these dri^ es is in 25 or 30ft, but tne other has only been driven a few feet, having just been commenced. The quartz coming to hand is- of fair grade, but of course only the heh-b portions of the love are being saved ior treatment. Some time ago a parcel of almo-t two tons of argendfeious ore was sent to Glasgow for treatt ment by a Dr. Hann>, and news has now [ been received that the result was highly satisfactory, the percentage of bullion saved being over 90 per cent. The exact details, however, have not yet come to hand, but are expected by the next mail. ,it is probable that should ths process prove a& satisfactory a? represented, a plant will be elected at Marototo, although nothing definite ha& yet been decided. Thames, April 5.
NEW GOLD FIND. A correspondent sends the folio -vi ng :—: — Some few months ago the Lovvrie brothers, prospecting at the head of the Tararu, brought into Urahamstown a bagfull of rich bpeeimens which they had tound on the surface. Since theu they have been employed in suiface working to try and discover the reef from whence the specimens came. The result has been that they have opened several highly aiuiforous reefs — a trial one ton parcel giving a return of lloz, worth £3 per oz. This lot the Lowries carried in their hands for some two miles over a very rough country. The quartz was then packed to Grahamstown with horses. The new goldfield as it may be very properly designated is situated near the Trig Hill, Upper Tararu, on the Nightingale Creek a mile or so beyond the old Vulcan. The run of gold has been traced for a distance oi over two miles towaids tKe head of the Puru and there is no doubt but that this find is a continuation of the Grahamstown run of gold for booking due South, in the distance can be seen the lulls and workings at the back of Punga Flat. A number of claims ha\e been oaken up on the line ot reefs and gold can be got all along the line. \.-'apital is> only required bo develop the district. For such a show in Australia diggers ■ ould rush hundred 0 of milet*. The claims at present on the line ot reefs are the Neptune, Mermaid, (Prospector's) Nymph, Trident and two other claims winch have just been pegged. The quartz shown from the Prospector's is impregnated right through the stone with coarse gold. Nkw Moanataiaki. — The monthly cleaning up took place yesterday for 670z. 18d\\t. melted gold Irom 32 tons quartz, which includes a trial parcel from the leaders at the Crown battery level, and which did not prove payable. Lone Hand. — Mr Moore took over the various claims now included in this mine from private owners to-day, and afterwards insptcted the workings with a view of commencing operations at an early date on behalf of the Company.

Thames, April 4. May Queen. — As 16 feet of the shaft has now been timbered up, the contractors will be able to get ahead with cleaning out the shaft. New Manukau. — Good dirt is coming to hand. The monthly cleaning up took place yesterday, when 67o<s ot melted gold was lefcurned. New Moanataiaki — There is a slight impiovemenb in the winze at No 3 level, but it is still very small. Should it not improve after sinking a lew more feet the manager purposes to open out on it from winze to ascertain il the lead carries down the good mineral on either side. At No 4 level the drive is well into the hangingwall of the big reef. The main body of quartz is jather hungiy-looking, bus there are some nice stringers drooping down from, the hangingwall. These are carrying some nice mineial indications, but, as yet no gold has been seen.
