Commander Camerons New Enterprise.

Commander Lovbtt Cameron j who is Pbill in 'his forties, and full of spirit and sanguine aspiration, has a scheme in his head which, if ever realised, would beab his big feat of crossing Africa from east to west, before any 'Other Englishman or European. The scheme is not a hew one, for it means the stamping .out of the' slave-trade in Africa. He hopes to eriltety the sympathies of the English Church' in the cauSe. And it is said that he hap already secqred the ' moral Support ' of the Archbishop of Canterbury. As he also wants something -more tangible, he might find a certain Franco- African Archbishop — Cardinal Lavigerie — of Carthage, more of his way ©f thinking. Commander Camerons previous exploits must have been a good preparation for any enterprise which he may yet undertake in slavery suppression. He knows, as'no other ■European knows it, the African interior from Zanzibar to the coast of Guinea. He has proved, by the testimony of his personal experience, that the slave trade cannot be suppressed by Red Sea and Indian Ocean cruisers alone. It must be stamped out in tho interior. But to stamp it out by ' fighting ' would be to introduce evils as great as slavery. Commander Cameron knows what the effects of opening trade routes would be.
