Loud Knutsfokd, in replying to Lord Strathedon's motion affirming the good effect of the Colonial Conference in 1387, said that Imperial Federation was a difficult and delicate question. There must be a full inquiry into the wishes and interests of the colonies before the idea of holding a conference on the subject could be entertained. The Imperial Government, he assured the House, was willing to consider any scheme the colonies might submit, giving them a more diroct share in the Council of the Empire. Emigrants who have returned from the Argentine .Republic in a destitute condition comp'ain that the country is crowded with unemployed. The Liberal Unionist party hold a conference at Birmingham on April 24, at which important decisions are expected to be arrived at. Mr E. Count Herbert Bismarck will confer with Lord Salisbury on the colonial policy and the foreign relations of Germany, but does not propose to negotiate for a formal alliance between the two countries. Sir Charles Kussell denies that he received Pigott's letter, stating he could not stand the ordeal of crossexamination, until after his flight. Sir R. Webster declared he handed it to him two, not five days, before Pigott was called up for examination. The price of shares in the new Bank of England and Melbourne will be ;£io. Rain has fallen, but it will not be sufficient unless a really heavy fall takes place immediately. Lambing, even where the conditions are favourable, must be poor, and squatters will again have to face failure similar to last year.
