In the House of Commons, Sir William Vernon Harcourb moved big amendment criticising the action ot Sir R. E. Webster, Abtorney-Geneial, in connection with the proc edings before the *' Times "-Parnell Commission. Pie accused the AttorneyGeneral ot delaying to call Pigobb until he had piled up eveiythjng he could which was like y to prejudice Parnell, though he was awaie that Pigott's evidence was quite untrustworthy. Sir R. E. Webster, in replying bo the stiictuies passed upon him by Sir W. Vernon oHarcourb, said that Pigobt had written him a letter admitting that he would nob be able bo stand the cross-exam-ination, and this letter he (Sir B. E. Webscer) handed to Sir Charles Russell, bhe leading counsel for the Pamellibes, five days before Pigott was called as a witness. He stated further that at the request of Sir Charles Russell he refrained fiom reading this letter to .he Commission immediately upon its receipt. The apology published by the "Times" upon the collap s e of the case with reference to the forged letters « as written by him (Sir R. E. Webster), and he considered it was an ample apology. In the course ot the debate, Mr Parnell challenged any member present to avow his beli-f that bhe letters were ac'ually written by him, as had been stated by the " Times." Mr Redmond's motion to leduce the Attorney General s salary as a protest against his action in the ca&e was negatived by a majority of 80.
