Tiik Bawke's Bay Jockey Club were favoured with glorious weather for the first day's racing. The attendance was about 2,000, and £4,770 parsed through the Lotalisatorc. Fixe favourites won out of six: races. The only accident which oc curred was the fail of Harold in the Hurdle Race, whereby the horse was so seriously injured that he had to be destroyed. The course was ha d and favourable for making good time. In the Free Handicap the mile was cut out in Imin 42^sec ; while Recluse, in the Railway Stakes, ran six furlongs in the fast time of Imin 15 2-ssec, and also won easily. Lady Norah started favourite in the Cup, with Leopold second in demand ; but Kecluse won in Sinin 6 2 ssec. Nothing could touch Cynisca in the Nursery Plate. Hawke's Bay Cor, a handicap of 400sov& ; second horse to receive 50sovs, and the third horoe 20so\s from the stake, lj miles. Mr J. Kennedy's Recluse, 3yrs, 7st 131b (including 51b penalty, McCormick)... Mr C. Berestord's Leopold, 3yrs, 6sl 12lb (Lindsay) ... . . . . . . 2 Mr J Paul's Fox ton, 3yrs, 6st 61b (Collello; . Lady Norah, Silence, and Salisbury als ran. The flag was lowered to afair staifc, of which Leopold got slightly the best, with Recluse, Foxton,* and Salisbury next, the last to move being Silence and Lady Norah. At the railway bend Salisbury rushed to the front, and Leopold dropped back fourth, m bile Silence and Jfoxton improved their positions, Passing the stand Leopold ran up on the outside of hishorses, and joined Salisbury in the van, with Recluse and Foxton handy, Silence and Lady Norah the last pair. At the back of the course Foxton made a movement and took second place to Leopold, S&fci&bury dropping back third, and Lady Ntjvrah coming to the front. At the railway bend Reclu&e gained ground, but Leopold was still going well a length ahead ot Foxton, Recluse being a length and a half behind the latter. When fairly in the straight whips were out on all except Recluse, a\lio came with a well-timed spurt, and outpaced Leopold at the finish, winning by two lengths. Foxton was some distance off, third, Lady Norah fourth, Salisbury fifth, and Silence a bad last. Time, 3min 6 2-sth sec. Dividends : £4 and i' 6 7s. Nursery Plate of 100so\s. ; six furlongsMr G.
