H.M-S. CALLIOPE. REPORTS REGARDING HER CONDITION.
Tins " Sydney Morning Herald " of March 13th says : A caole from Auckland yesterday is to the eilecb thab bhe man-of-war, H.M.s. Callioiie, which took the iDlace at Samoa of H.M.s. Royalist, will be relieved early next month by H.M.s. Rapid. This news is looked upon with surprise here. It was supposed that the Calliope had relieved the Royalist with a view to remaining on the Samoan station for some time. The removal of the Calliope, however, has given rise to a renewal of the reports which found their way home atter she was last docked hero. These, it may be icmombered, were to the effect that many ot the bolts which secure the wooden sheathing to the steel ship were found to be mote than half eaten through by galvanic action, bhe water having gob m between the sheathing somewhere, making a kind of "cell" between the copper on the bottom and the iron bolts inside. It is now surmised that the Calliope will undergo another docking at Auckland while the Admiral is there, for the reports which have been sent home are said to state that both the Admiral and the captain weie anxious about the condition of the vessel's hull." With reference to the &bove remarks, we understand that bhe Rapid is to join bhe Calliope at Samoa, not lclieve her.
