MUNICIPAL RETRENCHMENT. CITY ENGINEER ABOLISHED. Wellington, March 21.
The Cily Council have adopted a scheme of retrenchment by which £800 a year is cut oft.their ollicers' salaries. Even then the total amount will be £2,740 as against £1,301 at Christchurch and £2,870 at Vanedin. Tho City Engineer is to be abolished, as .the councillors consider there are no large works requiring a skilled engineer, and a clerk of works in permanent charge will be quite sufficient.
