" What a horrid noise !" cackled the geese, as poor old Neddy brayed his welcome to some of his brothers who were pasting his field. Neddy hung down his head. Be had done the best he could, and he fclb hurt to be spoken about in that waj'. Just then the farmer, with his dog, Drover, went across the other end of the fiold. The geese began to scream their loudest, though Drover had not taken the least notice of them. •' Oh !" said Neddy, " what on earth are you making that horrid noise for? One would think something had hurt you, or perhaps that is the way you welcome your Mends.'' If geese can look foolish, they did, at any rate they turned their backs upon him. So Neddy went on : "I brayed because I saw some of my old friends, and I am sure they Avere.glacl to hear me. "But you set up a horrid screech without any reason at all, so far as I can toll."
