STRANGE NARROW ESCAPE OF THE KENILWORTH. A COLLISION AVERTED. Sydney, March 4.
An occurrence of a remarkable nature is reported by the Auckland schooner Kenilvvorth, which has just arrived from Gisborne. On the night of the 25th ult, she was some distance from the coast of New Zealand when a large steamer, which was steering as if bound for Cook's Strait, bore down upon her. The schooner burnt flare-ups, and took other measures to attract the attention of those on the steamer, but apparently without any effect. The steamer con'inued to steer right down on the Kenilworth, and at last, in order to avert a collision, the schooner was compelled to keep away to such an extent that the vessel jibed, and the mainboom came over from one side of the vessel to the other with such force that the rigging was damaged. The collision was, however, averted, and the steamer passed on her way.
