The New Year Opens With Bright Prospects.
The New Year (f-ays the "Pall Mall Budget") opens will) brighter prospects all round than any of its predecessors ior more than a decade, and in agricultuial circles hope is steadily rising. One indication is seen in the reports of shorthorn sales for 1888. Last year theio weio 1,594 animals sold by public auction, realising £44,013, or an average of £27 15s 8d ; whereas in 1887 there were 1,480 sold, realising" £37,966, or an average of £25 13s. This advance of £2 2s 8d means a great deal. Much of this advance is due to the South American demand, for with the practical closing of the United States to our breeders the Argentine Republic has enteied the field, and both af- regards numbers and prices has proved most opportune. The highest prices realised in 1888 were by Lord Feversham's herd, at the sale of which last September one animal &old for a thousand guineas, and the average of forty-two animals was £88 4s 6d.
