UNDER A RELIGIOUS SPELL. DESIRES TO AVOID MURDER. Welli ngton, Feb. 23.
Mrßush,R.M. at Tauranga, has wired fco the Native Department that he and Wi Pere had an interview with Te Kooti. The latter refused to return for the reasons he has already given. He said many persons had been killed on account of jealousy and grudge the same as Christ, and he was only daring as they did. If he was killed he could not help it. Mr Bush pointed out that his persistence might end in the death of the others. He said, " No ; I kill no one, nor will my followers." After further conversation, in which Mr Bush urged him to give way to the advice of the Government, he seemed to admit the force of the arguments, but said he must pr O to Turanganui to see his relations and make peace. Mr Bush said if he persisted the Government would be compelled to areest him. Te Kooti said he would be glad to be arrested by the hands of his father, because he would then break through his own peacemaker. Mr Bush concluded : "I believe he will go. It appears he is under some religious spell, and acts as one who does not care what becomes of his body if his soul is saved."
