THE VIGILANCE COMMITTEE. £500 PER WEEK ASKED FOR. THE COMMITTEE DISSOLVED Gisborne, Feb. 23,

The following were the proceedings at the meeting of the Vigilance Committee yesterday before the Premier gave his decision : — "Resolved to ask the settlers to guarantee £500 per week for the maintenance of a force whilst in the field. ' Mrs Hardy interviewed the Court, and informed it that an attempt to lay an information against Te Kooti for threatening to murder herself and children and other settlers had failed as she refused to give the names of her informant. At 3.30 a message was received from the Premier, desiring the Committee to dissolve, as its existence was unlawful and embarrassing to the authorities, i After an interview with the Premier and discussion, an order was complied with and the Committee dissolved, being convinced that it was for the best interest of settlers to do so. Notices prepared for calling out and organising the settlers were withdrawn, the Premier's assurance being given that Te Kooti should not enter the district.
